Its Labour Weekend.. Yah a day off work. The joys of daylight savings are beginning to register with you. An excursion for the railway enthusiast. A full days travel to one of New Zealand’s bigger cities – New Plymouth.
Moving through the Rangitikei we climb up the Westmere bank just after leaving Wanganui and enter into the special part of New Zealand known these days as the NAKI.
We head on and past Fonterras Milk plant at Wheraroa through Hawera and on to Stratford by now the mighty shape of Mt Taranaki is before you and on the right side of your carriage the distant slopes of Mt Ruapehu. Both mountains glistening in the mid day sun with the snow falls of winter still clearly visible.
We past on the through small dairy towns of Eltham, Stratford and Inglewood and then swing left for our approach to New Plymouth.
The “Express” will enter New Plymouth and go right into the down town area where there will be a two hour break.
You can go to the Downtown Shopping Complex or visit the famous Len Lyle exhibition which is over the road from where we will stop.
Fully refreshed you will re board the train at 4pm for your return journey to Feilding and because of daylight savings there will still be views to be savoured. A true days outing for those who enjoy rail travel in our beautiful country.
