Feilding to Whanganui Excursion

Our Steam Locomotive Wab794  will haul our four red 1930’s carriages to Whanganui, travelling via Marton, arcoss farmland, thru the Fordell Tunnel and then onto Whanganui.

 We will cross the Whanganui River at Whanganui then slowly steam into the city centre.  At Whanganui you have three options available.  You can walk into town for a few hours, take a river boat trip, or a take Garden bus tour.

If you choose to walk into the city, the walk is about 2 Km so a moderate fitness is required.  Note: Over 3 hours layover in Whanganui.

The PS Waimarie river boat tour includes the bus connections to and from the PS Waimarie.  This is an optional tour.

The Garden Bus Tour will visit the Wanganui Bason Botanic Gardens and Virginia Lake.  This option includes the bus transport from the train and return.

The Wanganui Bason Botanic Gardens has a variety of gardens including the Exotic Conifer Arboretum,  Dress Circle, Conservatories’ subtropical garden, Native Bush and Wetlands area, Lakeside Flats which are a popular area for picnics.

Virginia Lake (Rotokawau) is one of Wanganui’s premier parks, offering a range of activities including a 25 minute woodland walk around the lake. The birdlife, both on and around the water, is a major attraction and this is complemented by an aviary.

The Winter Gardens is an all-year-round attraction with colourful displays whatever the season or weather. Entry is FREE. Adjoining the Winter Gardens is the Art Garden which combines an intriguing blend of sculpture and garden art.

While you are in the City or on one of the two options tours our Steam Train will take people from Whanganui for a ride into the country and return.

On the return journey our train will be licenced allowing you a glass or wine or beer on the return journey.  No BYO.  A packed lunch can be pre-purchased for $10, and we will also have a small range of food for sale on the train as well.
