One day in Taranaki
Date: | 01/11/15 |
Time: | 8:00 am - 7:25 pm |
Location: | Feilding Railway Station |
If you yearn for the sight of our New Zealand dairy country side, you would love to view our Nations dairy herds as they graze peacefully on Taranaki grass whilst standing at the gateway Mount Taranaki welcomes you to this rural wonderland, then this is the excursion for you.
Departing Feilding we move quickly through the Manawatu and Rangitikei area we soon approach Wanganui. Departing Wanganui we climb the “Westmere Bank” one of the steepest pieces of railway track in New Zealand. Our DC Class Diesel locomotive quickly hauls us to the top of the Westmere and out into rural Taranaki. Waverely soon pasts us by as does Patea where the old freezing works are but a wistful memory. Magnificent views of the mighty Tasman sea are afforded us from north of Waverly to nearly Hawera. Shortly before we arrive in Hawera we past the production plant of New Zealand’s biggest company “Fonterra”
Those passengers who wish to take the side trip to Tawhiti Museum will leave the train at Hawera and will be bused to Tawhiti Museum. Your admission cost covers the fantastic “Whalers and Traders” exhibit, you won’t be disappointed.
Weather permitting the bush tramway will be operating for an additional fare.
Mr Badgers Cafe will be open right inside the museum allowing you to purchase a range of lunch options.
If you want to travel through to Stratford you can book an onwards ticket at this link. Click here to see Hawera to Stratford and Return trip.
For those who decide to take our second option passenger depart the train at Hawera where buses will take 50 passengers (SOLD OUT) through the Egmont National Park to Dawson Falls Lodge where a light lunch will be served. Lunch will consist of home made soup (vegetarian and gluten free), a scone, a club sandwich, a sausage roll and a sweet slice, plus a cup of tea or filter coffee.
While up the mountain (if the weather is clear), your views out on to the Taranaki hinterland are stunning, and if you turn around you should be able to see the mountain top.
This will be a rail excursion to be remembered for years.
